Training in AAI

It is SCAS’s view that anyone delivering AAI should be suitably trained with the necessary skills and knowledge to ensure the safe and effective delivery of services.

Dog with elderly care home residents. It is essential that human and animal welfare is given due consideration in all interventions. Currently, there is no recognised AAI practitioner ‘qualification’.  Most practitioners are qualified in a health, social care or animal welfare specialism and then go onto receive specialist training in AAI, something which SCAS strongly recommends.

In the UK, there are limited training opportunities available to practitioners interested in exploring how animals can be included in their practice. SCAS currently offers a specialist, eight-day training course aimed at professionals and students working in health, care and animal welfare. We also provide one-day training in AAI on request and are currently developing a distance-learning course in this area.
