Pedro's Fund was set up in 1997 at the suggestion of a SCAS life member.
The fund was established for small research projects, with the intention that it might in turn become the catalyst for attracting funding for larger scale research. The fund was named Pedro's Fund in honour of a dog, Pedro, which was very dear to her owner. Pedro was a loving, faithful companion to her, accompanying her to most placed and enriching her life in many ways. Pedro also achieved PAT dog status and, with her, visited many people in hospital.
Miss Johnson, a dear friend, was also very fond of Pedro, and the three of them spent many happy times together. This special bond is beautifully portrayed in Pedro's Journal, a copy of which is available to SCAS members from the SCAS library.
A generous starter to the fund was made in 1997 and over the years the fund has continued to receive donations, including several from Miss Johnson. This has enabled SCAS to initiate several research projects and by the end of 2005, Pedro's Fund was fully utilised. In 2006, Pedro's Fund received another generous donation from Miss Johnson of £5,000. She hopes that her recent contribution will also encourage others to donate to the fund and thereby enhance SCAS research activities.
SCAS is currently considering various proposals for initiating new research into the human-companion animal bond. If would like to submit a proposal, please contact the SCAS director. We will report on how Pedro's Fund will be utilised in the coming months.
