Job Opportunity: Instructional Paraprofessional/Dog Handler

A unique opportunity for an individual that has a certified Therapy Dog, and who would like to work as a Paraprofessional/Dog Handler in an Animal Assisted Intervention Program (NJ, USA). The Calais School is a non-profit state-approved provider of special education for students with special needs in Whippany, NJ. The school serves students in grades K through 12 Plus with multiple learning disabilities.

As a Paraprofessional, you will provide additional support in the Special Education classroom by working with individual children or small groups of children to reinforce new lessons.  As a Dog Handler, you will provide training and care to students as your dog will be trained to work with students and teachers in our related services department.

Education:

  • College, Associate’s Degree or Higher
  • Substitute Teacher Certification, required (we will assist you in attaining this if you do not already have it).

Requirements:

  • Related job fieldwork experience with demonstrated ability to work without constant supervision and an interest in special education.
  • Owns a dog(s) who is certified through a local or national therapy dog organization and has passed the Canine Good Citizen test.
  • Proven experience working as a dog handler.
  • Any experience with obedience and/or therapy dog training is a plus.
  • The hours of this position are flexible and could be part-time or full-time.
  • Salary is to be determined and will be negotiable
