The Blue Cross
The Blue Cross finds permanent homes for homeless and unwanted animals through its adoption centres, including taking in (by prior arrangement) pets whose owners have died. It provides temporary welfare boarding for pets whose owners have been taken into hospital and can't afford kennel fees. The charity also treats the pets of owners who cannot afford private veterinary services, and offers veterinary grants for people on means tested benefits or state pensions. Jointly runs the Pet Bereavement Support Service (see below) and offers a range of pet care information leaflets.

The Cinnamon Trust
A national charity for elderly people and their pets. It has a network of over 10,000registered volunteers. They visit housebound owners, take dogs for daily walks; volunteer foster pets as one of their family when owners face a spell in hospital. They have established a national register of nursing homes, residential homes, sheltered housing for older people that will accept residents and their pets.

Encourages people to consider rehoming a rescue dog. Dogs Trust Outreach Projects provide advice and services for pet owners who are homeless or in housing crisis. Advice and information is also available for agencies and housing providers who are working with pet owners in housing crisis. The Dogs Trust Canine Care Card scheme is a special FREE service that gives you peace of mind, knowing that Dogs Trust will look after your dog in the event of your death.

The Pet Bereavement Support Service (PBSS) offers support and understanding to bereaved pet owners through a national network of trained volunteer telephone and email befrienders, all of whom are ready to help. Pet Fostering Service Scotland (PFSS)
The PFSS was established in 1985 to provide temporary accommodation in the fosterers' homes for the pets of elderly owners who, in an emergency, could not make alternative arrangements for their care. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA)
RSPCA companion animal hospitals provide low-cost treatment for animals belonging to people in receipt of certain state benefits, or to those who otherwise cannot afford the fees of a private veterinary surgeon. The RSPCA can also arrange to see to the welfare of any animals that may survive you.
