Review "Curse of Raven"

We will be frank: comics based on video, television or film franchise rarely come out really interesting. Yes, there are exceptions. For example, the claustrophobic mini-series Aliens: Dead Orbit James Stokou, which was appreciated by G. R. Giger himself, the atmospheric work of Alyosha Kota about the world of Bloodborne or the Cosmic Odyssey Jack Kirby. But the vast majority of all these graphic continuations, prequels and spinophists are created with one purpose - to get even more money from the illegible and thirsty for new content of fans.

Well, it sounds a little cynical, so I’ll paraphrase: these comics are created so that fans can spend a little more time with their favorite heroes, and not in order to tell some original story. Who generally pays attention to the quality of the plot, if the superman is fighting against the terminator, or Evoki run through the forest and fall into exciting (or not so) incidents.

Fortunately, the comics based on the Witcher from Dark Horse are more likely to be exceptions to this rule - it was not for nothing that the prize laureate Azer Tobin was responsible for the script here. “Fox children” and “Glass House”, the first two volumes of the series, translated on the Ukrainian publishing house Vovkulaka, were atmospheric, frightening stories. They instantly returned us to the mystical world of the games of CD Projekt Red (or Sapkovsky, if you are closer to the book Geralt). The ancient fans of the franchise were in the alleged delight - who did not dream of being in the wilds of Velen again?

But even the readers unfamiliar with history could appreciate the successful combination of East European folklore, the dynamic plot and drawing of Joe Kuerio, who was clearly inspired by the characteristic style of Mike Minoyola. If it was possible to complain about something, then only one-in the first two volumes, it was somehow not enough connection with the plot of the games and books themselves. Yes, we all missed Geralt, but I personally wanted to see Yennifer and Ciri again, because it was this family dynamics that was the emotional engine of the franchise. It’s a little embarrassing to even talk about it, but there was not enough Fanservice, which is usually a lot in other comics based on games.

And so, in the “Curse of the Ravens”, Dark Horse finally fulfilled all our dreams and told a story that interprets the classic plot of Sapkovsky in a new way and serves as a direct continuation of the “Wild Gon” finale. I will not spoil the details, but in short, then professional hunters for the monsters of Geralt and Ciri take up the risky order together - to kill a stag that haunts the inhabitants of one quiet town. The new business amazingly echoes the events of many years ago: then Geralt took a similar order, but tried to disappoint the bloodthirsty monster, and almost paid his life for his naivety. Yes, we are talking about the poor daughter of the King of the Voltest, with whom Geralt fought desperately in the Witcher, the first story of the Sapkovsky cycle.
