Coping with Pet Loss

Grieving for the loss of a pet, whether through death, parting, or enforced separation, can be a sad and difficult experience. Below you will find a number of services and resources to help you through this difficult time.

Pet Loss Support Online Surgery

theralphsitelogo412Developed by SCAS, in collaboration with The Ralph Site, the Pet Loss Support Online Surgery was a free fortnightly online group service offering an opportunity to spend time with people that understand what you are going through. Various aspects of pet loss and grief were presented by our live presenter and attendees were welcome to ask questions or just sit a listen – as much or as little as they like.

  • The Pet Bereavement Support Service

In 1994  SCAS developed the Pet Bereavement Support Service when a need was seen for support for those suffering the loss of a beloved pet.  Between 1998 and 2013 the PBSS was jointly run by SCAS and Blue Cross.  Since 1st January 2013, the PBSS is solely run by Blue Cross.

  • Call the Pet Bereavement Support Service telephone support line on 0800 096 6606 (free for UK only including northern Ireland). The support line is open from 8.30am – 8.30pm every day. All calls are free and confidential from a land line. If calling from a mobile phone, some phone networks may charge. Support is provided by trained volunteers.

Leaflets and books on pet loss

There are many excellent books on the subject of pet loss available from libraries, bookshops and online retailers. Here, we list a selection of recommended titles that cover various aspects of grieving for a pet, that can normally be purchased directly through the SCAS office.  All of our publications are currently in storage with limited access.  Please bear with us during this restructuring period.
